PN-G’s Nelson gives team big play threat at receiver

With blonde hair, blue eyes and average size, Jayce Nelson doesn’t look like a player opposing teams would build game plans around.

Just try stopping him, though.

Nelson, a senior at Port Neches-Groves and the area’s leading receiver with 26 catches for 376 yards and three touchdowns, often draws double-teams in coverage from opposing defenses – and still comes up with big plays.

Nelson says the biggest reason for his success is his route-running. Port Neches-Groves head football coach Brandon Faircloth says the 6-foot-1 Nelson can do it all, though.

Nelson holds all of the receiving records at PN-G except for two.

“He’s a hard-worker, has great hands, is smart, is a competitor – I couldn’t think of a better example of a receiver I want for our offense than Jayce Nelson,” Faircloth said. “There’s not a category I could create where he is not going to be toward the top of it. Route-running, hands, intelligence.”

Despite all of Nelson’s success this season and last season, when he finished the season with 74 receptions for 1,123 yards and was a first-team District 20-4A selection, he only has one scholarship offer- from Div. I FCS Southeastern Louisiana.

Nelson said McNeese State and Sam Houston State have shown interest too but not Lamar.

“I guess (schools) are just waiting to see if I have a good senior year,” said Nelson, who also plays basketball and baseball.
