PORT NECHES — Port Neches-Groves football coach Brandon Faircloth made a decision two years ago to go with a junior named Adam Morse at quarterback.
The decision was made hard because there was a returning senior named Ky Walker coming off a 2,128-yard and 16-touchdown season in his junior campaign.
Faircloth’s decision worked out for the best because Morse threw for 2,937 yards and 31 touchdowns as a junior and 2,277 yards and 30 touchdowns as a senior.
Now Faircloth has another decision to make at the quarterback decision with Morse set to graduate on May 26.
It looks to be a two-man race between sophomore Austin Bost and freshman Roschon Johnson.
“Bost and Roschon are both great competitors,” Faircloth said. “It is an open competition right now and it is not like they are competing to become a starter and the other just a back up.
The one not named a starter at quarterback will be on the field in another position. We are not feeling sorry for ourselves with those two guys.”
Bost has not been able to participate in too many PNG workouts lately but is fully back in the fold after coming off the baseball field. Bost is the starting third baseman for the Indians who won the District 22-5A championship and reached the second round.
“Bost obviously has a strong arm since he is a third baseman,” Faircloth said. “He has a great arm. He is a very smart player and he will be able to help our football team next year.”
Johnson is a freshman with a strong arm and natural ability to make plays.
“Nobody is going to outwork him,” Faircloth said of Johnson. “He is constantly working to improve his craft. I know I come up here on the weekends and Roschon is out there working.”
The competition for the starting spot could come at any time but there was no indication Faircloth would make the decision before fall practice.
As far Morse, Faircloth does wish he could have one more year with the future Lamar Cardinals player.
“If you can figure out how to get him another year of eligibility, please call me,” Faircloth said. “He is an all-state quarterback but he was so much more than that. He did a great job
sharing with both Roschon and Bost what it takes to be a great quarterback. Both of those guys got to see first hand how hard Adam worked at it. Adam left a legacy with his statistics but he also leaves a legacy through these two guys now. Adam means a lot more to this program than just in the record books. Adam Morse will be around PNG for a very long time.”
Faircloth also reported a position change for junior Logan LeJeune. LeJeune, who was an all-state safety last year, is now slated as a linebacker.
“Logan LeJeune is one of the best defensive players I have ever seen,” Faircloth said. “Logan loves contact. He is tough, fast and smart. If you get a chance to put a player like Logan
closer to the ball, you make your whole defense better.”
