The Port Neches-Groves defense forced four turnovers and quarterback Adam Morse threw two touchdown passes as the Indians defeated Central 21-7 Friday to move back to the top of the district standings.

WHAT HAPPENED
Linebacker Trey Rembert, a four-year starter for the Indians, starred for the defense on Senior Night. Rembert recorded an interception, forced fumble and fumble recovery for the Indians, who held the Jaguars to 219 yard of total offense.

Morse connected with receivers Jack Giblin and Bryce McGough on his touchdown passes and threw for 122 yards. The Indians win, coupled with Nederland’s loss to Goose Creek, moved them into a first-place tie with the Bulldogs.

“Credit to our coaches for having a good game plan,” Indians coach Brandon Faircloth said. “We came out flying and Trey played like a senior should have played on Senior Night.”

TURNING POINT
Jaguar running back Devwah Whaley cut the Indians’ lead to 14 midway through the fourth quarter and following a failed fourth-down attempt on the next Indians’ drive, the Jaguars looked poised to make a late comeback. Indians linebacker intercepted Jaguars quarterback Chris Boudreaux on the first play following the failed fourth-down conversion to seal the victory.

“We had to fight through some adversity there at the end,” Faircloth said. “But we did and that was a great play for us.”

MOST-SPECTACULAR PLAY
With the Indians clinging to a 7-0 lead midway through the second quarter and facing third and goal, Morse found Giblin on a slant route across the middle. Giblin extended his arms to make the catch while taking a nasty hit from a Central defender.

Giblin held on to the ball but stayed down on the turf for several seconds before gingerly walking off the field. The touchdown catch proved to be the game-winning score for the Indians.

“That was a heck of a catch,” Morse said. “He did a heck of a job to go get it. That’s why he’s a Division I athlete.”

BY THE NUMBERS
The Indians’ 14-point win was their closest margin of victory this season. The Indians had won their previous six games by an average of 31 points.    Boxscore

HE SAID IT
“For us to come out and play like that and for Nederland to lose,” Rembert said. “That’s the best way for us seniors to go out.”
