Jeff Bergeron - Class of 1973

Any discussion of Port Neches-Groves football naturally brings to mind Jeff "The Jet" Bergeron.  Nicknamed "The Jet" because of his blazing sub 10 second speed, Bergeron thrilled Southeast Texas gridiron fans for three seasons.

Bergeron was an instant success at PN-G, rushing for over 900 yards as a sophomore Wishbone halfback. He claimed the first of three All-District honors that year. As a junior in 1971, he ran for over 1,550 yards and 33 touchdowns, earning the first of his two All-State awards along with All-District honors. In 1972 he gained over 1,465 yards, scored 23 touchdowns, and threw for 2 touchdowns earning concensus All-District, All-State and All-American awards.

He finished his high school career with nearly 4,000 yards rushing and 67 touchdowns. All within 30 games as the Indians had a district loss in each of those seasons.  Despite being one of the most potent offensive teams in the state, it was a time when only the district champion advanced to the playoffs.  The playoff potential of those great PN-G teams, and the additional yardage that Bergeron might have gained is left to imagination.

The most highly recuited player in the state after his senior season, Bergeron went on to play at The University of Houston and later transferred to Lamar University.  Although he never reached his potential on the college gridiron, he was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the 12th round of the 1978 NFL draft.

#24, Jeff "The Jet" Bergeron.  A living legend to future Indian players at the time, one of the all-time great running backs in Southeast Texas history, and one of the greatest PN-G Indian running backs to this day.
