Former PN-G Coach Bruce Bush Selected to THSCA Hall of Honor

Congratulations to former PN-G assistant coach Bruce Bush on his selection to the THSCA Hall of Honor, Class of 2015.

Coach Bush joins these former PN-G head coaches as members of the prestigious coaches hall of honor.

Gene McCollum, Class of 1966

O.A. “Bum” Phillips,  Class of 1984

Doug Ethridge, Class of 1989

Bush coached football for 42 years, both as an assistant and head coach. He began his coaching career in 1970 as an assistant at Sweeny.

In 1974, he went to Port-Neches Groves and coached under Doug Ethridge. It was there he learned the offense that became his signature —the slot-t.

“This offense is what I’ve know all my life,” Bush said. “For me to do something else would be false identity. It would not be me.”

Bush coached at PN-G for three seasons including the 1975 State Championship and 1974 and 1976 Semi-Finalist seasons.

Bush’s career record as a head coach is 272-111-8 in 34 seasons including stops at Dimmitt, Livingston, PSJA High, Alice, Gregory-Portland, Donna, San Marcos and PSJA North, winning 12 district titles and advancing to the playoffs in 24 of those seasons

His 272 win total tied him with Monte Driskell of Crocket for 16th on the Texas all-time coaching list.

He is a member of the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame, Coastal Bend Coaches Hall of Fame, and a respected mentor who has been a winner wherever he’s coached.
